Chlöe Howl - No Strings
Chloe Howl - a girl at just 17 years of age who is already wowing critics with her quirky and interesting lyrics.
At just 17 years of age, it's crazy to believe that Howl has already been able to deliver and perfect a sound like she has. But, with an immediately noticeable Adele-esque Cockney accent, that shines through in her talking / singing sort of style - this is definitely a voice that you can pinpoint to say that this is definitely the sound of Chloe Howl.
In previous years, accents that shine through in songs have seen singers like Lily Allen and Kate Nash propelled to stardom - but when it comes to the music side of things, with 'No Strings', we can see that Howl has more than just a quirky accent and detailed lyrics, she falls nicely into a pop category that sits on the edge of a synth-pop line.
'No Strings' is such a strong debut single that it's not hard to see why Chloe is garnering attention with the track at such a rapid pace. There are so many standout lyrics from the track, which is extremely clear in it's message (if she's talking about you, she even thinks your gay, so there's no hope of you getting back together, just saying), 'don't even know if I'm the right sex, you don't even know if I'm the right sex, do you?', and 'fuck your no strings'. From the get-go, Chloe is making it clear that she won't be beating about the bush with her music, with expletives and disses around every corner. We like this girl already.
The track reminds us of Tegan & Sara's sound, delivering slick, chilled pop tracks with synth riffs - mixed with the sound of a more vocally experimental Lily Allen. Both of which are impressive comparisons for someone only releasing their debut single, due to the quality of both Tegan & Sara and Lily Allen's output.
After hearing this, we here at Stereo Gold are eagerly awaiting more from Chloe, who has undoubtedly grabbed our attention - and she did so within about 20 seconds of her track 'No Strings':
I think she sounds too much like Kate Nash - shame really, she should find her own style and she's clearly trying too hard to be cool with her expletives - just not necessary.
