DEVolution - Too Much Heaven

It's time for a bit of a garage on Stereo Gold here - something we haven't really covered before.

The garage sound is undoubtedly rearing it's head back into the public's interest recently, largely thanks to the likes of Disclosure, Jessie Ware and Katy B to name but a few who are dabbling in the sound. Azealia Banks has touched on the garage side also. The sound felt big back in the early noughties with artists such as Artful Dodger and Ms. Dynamite experimenting with the garage sound. But, never the less, the sound is back sounding just as big and funky as ever.

DEVolution are another artist to add to the 'garage' list, and they're certainly doing it very well. And considering one half of the duo was a member of Artful Dodger - it's perhaps not a surprise they're reviving the sound, and making it sound just as fantastic, if not better, than it did 10 years ago. The track, 'Too Much Heaven' was posted onto their Soundcloud yesterday and features MNEK (who has appeared on tracks with Rudimental and Duke Dumont - certainly no stranger to working with big names to make fantastic music).

'Too Much Heaven' begins with a very soft feel, before lifting us into a funky and upbeat produced chorus. MNEK's soulful voice which sings 'too much heaven' lends itself perfectly to the simple but deep feeling instrumental. There's a definite quirk to the sound, and stuttered and echoes vocals from MNEK create a mixture of feelings within the track. There's an upbeat mystery about it, but despite the feeling of mystery - it's certainly fun, it's certainly full of bounce, and it's perfect for chilling in this wonderful summer sun.

The Disclosure feel is undoubtedly noticeable in this track, and certainly wouldn't seem out of place on their highly-acclaimed 'Settle' album. A very strong song from DEVolution is dropped here, where garage meets RnB meets funk - and all with a feel of 'let's chill by the pool to this'. That may just be me looking forward to a holiday. Great work from the duo.
