BRIT AWARDS | CRITICS CHOICE NOMINEES

It's that time of year where we make the leap from one year to another, and we try (sometimes unsuccessfully) to predict which artists are going to be big. First, it's the turn of The BRIT Awards to guide us towards which British artists are supposedly going to be staples within the music industry in 2013.

Nominee #01; Laura Mvula

Laura Mvula is a soul artist from Birmingham - with a timeless voice, that is sure to capture the attention of the British audience in 2013.

If we were to compare her to any modern day artist, it'd be quite difficult, she's got a fairly unique sound, but she sounds like a slowed down Lianne La Havas (one of those hyped up for 2012, but not one who particularly blew up - though she does have a US top 200 album!), with touches of Rebecca Ferguson herself, and Estelle in her voice, but not so much her music. She's been compared to soul legend, Nina Simone, which can't be a bad thing at all - and I definitely hear it in her music.

I won't go into much detail, as I imagine she's a shoe-in for the BBC Sound of 2013 list - and we'll be going through all 15 acts from Monday onwards. But, having listened to one of Laura's tracks ('Jump Right Out'), I get the impression she could be a great album seller, but I have my doubts about her tracks blowing up on the singles chart. But, only females have ever won the Critics Choice awards - so perhaps this year could be Mvula's year?!

Nominee #02; Tom Odell

Tom Odell is representing the solo males in this years Critics' Choice nominee list - and it's easy to see why he's garnering such attention.

Odell doesn't appear to have too much competition in his field right now, as not only is he a vocalist, he's a pianist. But, let's not confuse that with him being a jazz artist, or anything of the sort - his songs are very much pop ballads, but extremely melodic pop ballads at that. And after a gorgeous performance on Jools Holland, the Chichester-based singer is quickly becoming a hot tip for 2013.

Many different blogs have compared him to a modern day Jeff Buckley, but for me, Odell has much more passion and energy in his voice - and his track 'Another Love' is an incredibly strong track, that you could almost imagine in the hands of Adele if it were to be sung by a male. A very strong chorus, melody, and haunting beats - perfect ingredients for an artist of his sort, and perhaps he could break the trend of only females winning this award?

Nominee #03; AlunaGeorge

Now, unlike the previous two, this artist is one that I've been interested for months now - it's the London duo, AlunaGeorge.

The pair, consisting of vocalist Aluna Francis and musician George Reid have been circulating the blogosphere for over a year now. Their odd/unique (take your pick) sound is really what makes them such an interesting band. Enfusing RnB sounds, with a touch of electronic and pop, it'd be understandable to think that a musical mess was about to unfold in front of our very eyes - but the actual outcome is extremely melodic and intriguing, and is the reason that the critics are starting to hype this band to the high heavens.

It's their most recent release, Your Drums, Your Love that has really propelled this pair into the limelight - picking up regular airplay on Radio 1, reaching their B-List. It's a very interesting song, and despite it not seemingly having the most memorable chorus, the looped hook of the title worms it's way into your head, and it's exactly those quirky noises and hooks that we think are definitely going to see AlunaGeorge take on 2013 success.
