San Cisco - Beach
First of all, Happy New Year from me, and here's to a fabulous 2012 at Stereo Gold!
We're gonna kick off the new year with a glorious yet soothing bang - which comes from Australian band, San Cisco (surprisingly not from San Francisco). Their newest EP 'Beach' has been picking up interest after it's release on 10th December, but it would appear it's taken a whole month for me to realise exactly how good the band were, and especially the track itself, also called 'Beach', which has really hit me as being something very special.
San Cisco have released plenty of tracks in the past such as 'Awkward, but that track never really hit me in a big way. It was interesting, but I felt like they could do a lot better. My thoughts have been proved completely accurate with the release of their new EP, with all four tracks appealing to me, and really making me believe that San Cisco could be a band that are really going to produce the goods.
Some of the similar qualities that really draws me to songs like 'The Mother We Share', appear in the track, 'Beach'. The tracks begins with a dark & gloomy repeated instrumental, which would lead you to believe the track was going to quite haunting. You can feel the track building up to something, but you're not entirely sure what you're going to receive by the chorus. The verses, sung by a voice that reminds me of Ezra Koenig's voice a little (Vampire Weekend, if you're not sure).
But, the chorus brings a wonderful aura to surround the track. Female vocalist, Scarlett Stevens sends you soaring into the chorus with her saccharine sweet voice singing 'who's gonna catch you now (x2), why you so far away (x2)' - it's a hook that from one listen that did exactly what it intended to. It brought an additional flavour to the track, and takes you off onto a different angle with the song, a more dreamy and soothing angle than you originally expected. The keyboard twinkles throughout the chorus also helps to create this wonderful dreamy feeling, and the chorus almost makes you smile.
The band are signed to Columbia records, and with their wonderful slices of bubbly, fun and intriguing indie-pop, we have our fingers crossed that San Cisco are going to be big.
